What is NumberPulse?

NumberPulse shows you a numerical sequence with a gap, and you work out the hidden rule that generates it. Difficulty follows a deliberate weekly rhythm — gentler puzzles early in the week, sterner ones as it progresses — and everyone faces the identical sequence on the same day, so your solve time is a fair, comparable score on the global leaderboard. A new sequence arrives every midnight Eastern Time; past days live in the Archive.

The rules, step by step

  1. Study the sequence. You'll see several numbers with one position blank.
  2. Deduce the rule. Figure out the relationship that connects each term to the next.
  3. Enter the missing value. Type the number you believe fills the gap.
  4. Wrong answers cost time, not the game. An incorrect submission adds a time penalty; you can keep refining until you crack it.
  5. Fastest verified solve wins. Your score is your total time including penalties.

How scoring works

Like WordPulse, NumberPulse is time-based: lower is better, penalties are added to your elapsed time. Because a wrong submission costs seconds, the leaderboard rewards players who verify their rule against every visible term before committing — not those who fire off the first plausible guess.

A reliable method for cracking sequences

1. Check the differences first

Subtract each term from the next. If the differences are constant, you have an arithmetic progression. If the differences themselves form a pattern, you've found a second-order rule (the sequence of differences is itself a sequence).

2. When differences look chaotic, try ratios

Divide each term by the previous one. Sequences that multiply — doubling, tripling, or alternating factors — hide from subtraction but surrender instantly to division.

3. Look for interleaving

Many hard sequences are two simple patterns braided together. Read every second term as its own sub-sequence before assuming one complex rule governs the whole thing.

4. Recognise the usual suspects

Squares (1, 4, 9, 16), cubes (1, 8, 27), primes (2, 3, 5, 7, 11), and Fibonacci (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8) appear constantly. Spotting them on sight converts a minute of analysis into five seconds of recall.

5. Test your rule on the whole sequence

Before submitting, confirm your rule fits every given term, not just the last two. A rule that works on the tail but breaks on the first term is the classic wrong-submission trap.

Common mistakes to avoid

Worked example: spotting a layered rule

Suppose the sequence reads 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, and the next term is blank. The differences are 4, 6, 8, 10 — not constant, so it isn't a simple arithmetic progression. But those differences increase by exactly 2 each time, a second-order pattern. Continuing it, the next difference is 12, so the missing term is 30 + 12 = 42. This is the everyday shape of a NumberPulse puzzle: the surface looks irregular, but one layer down there's a clean rule. Training yourself to automatically compute the difference row is the fastest way to expose these. When the difference row is still irregular, take the differences again — a third row that's finally constant reveals a cubic or higher pattern, and even that is solvable once you see the structure.
